The Cl. FS 685 steam engines, fabricated between
1912 and 1927 based on the design of the Italian State Railways
(FS) Design Office in Florence, were indiscussed protagonists of
the great steam traction in Italy. They have been used to haul the
most important and faster trains on the main lines. The Cl. FS 685
has represented, almost unanimously, the height of the Italian school
in the design of steam engines. The great diffusion and longevity
of the Cl. FS 685, has made it the most representative among the
passenger Italian train locomotives. A total of 271 engines have
been fabricated in five series. Three engines are today officially
classified as historical locomotive by Trenitalia, the main Italian
Train Operating Company. The Gr. FS 685.196 shown in the photos
finished its restoration in November 2005 and is intended to haul
the most prestigious vintage trains in the next years.
