This class of steam engines was conceived for the
need of the steep and meandering lines of the Appenines, in the
central part of Italy, that needed flexible and high performance
locomotives. Thus, the project of class FS 740 was rielaborated
by adding a rear bearing axle and concentrating the weight of water
and coal supplies on the driving wheels. This has made possible
to achieve the engine maximum speed in both ways, back and forward,
with no need for turning the locomotive on a platform at the terminus.
Fabricated in 50 units between 1922 and 1923, four engines of this
class are efficient as historical locomotive.
